Secondary Beneficiary

A secondary beneficiary is a person designated to receive some or all of the death benefits of a life insurance policy in the event that the primary beneficiary is deceased when the insured dies. It is also reasonable to specify percentages between beneficiaries so that multiple beneficiaries receive the death benefit proceeds. Generally, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary are the names given to the pecking order of beneficiaries in an insurance policy.
